He might have a reason, he might not, but asking him in public invites attention to the fact that he might not have a reason. If he did it without realizing, it could shame him and put him on the defensive. If he did do it on purpose, it still doesn't negate what he's saying as an issue, and you've opened the floor to people who will dismiss him as hypocritical, which confirms his existing bias.
When in doubt, whatever you want to know, if one person can answer the question, ask privately.
[It doesn’t make sense. The statement was made in public. Doesn’t understanding it better benefit everyone who hears it? But he trusts Neal and he wouldn’t tell him this if it wasn’t what he believed. And he’s good with people. So. Okay.]
I don’t understand how clarifying a public statement in public doesn’t benefit everyone. I can’t be the only one with questions. But. You sound like you understand and I trust you.
[Neal considers how to answer for a moment, a little tired but not unwilling.]
It would help. Clarifying it publicly. But asking him privately gives him a chance to think through his own reasoning, refine it, then potentially add to the original post rather than forcing him to answer openly on the spot. Does that make more sense?
Unfortunately, yes. [That's more tired than anything else.] And you'll have satisfied your own curiosity and will have the facts on hand if becomes an open point of contention.
Avalon was harassing Will again. There was an altercation. He killed them this time. And even though Shaw believes Avalon was the aggressor, she’s got Will on lockdown. I was allowed to go over for a bit, but. I can’t stay because she won’t leave. And when I say she won’t leave, I mean the room. So I don’t really know whether he’s being punished or what. He’s going to see if she’ll bring him over tomorrow.

[Some recent events do make more sense in that light.]

Malcolm? What's still bothering you? Is it Kikimora's situation? Do you need someone to take a stint keeping an eye on her?
